About Project
Generated Maintenance Rule (MR) Structural Condition Assessment Monitoring Inspection Reports for IPEC’s Structures, Systems and Components (SSCs) in order to prevent loss of structures or structural component’s intended function. These SSCs (include Buildings & Facilities) are deemed essential for the Safe Shutdown of the Plant’s Nuclear Reactors.
Implementation of structures monitoring program are required by the federal government under 10CFR 50.65 (“Requirements for Monitoring the Effectiveness of Maintenance at Nuclear Power Plants”), and are performed under the guidance of Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Regulatory Guide (RG) 1.160, and NUMARC 93-01 (“Industry Guidelines for Monitoring the Effectiveness of Maintenance Rule at Nuclear Power Plants”).
For each SSC susceptible to aging effect combination, a specific set of parameters were selected for condition assessment, monitoring and inspection to ensure that aging degradation leading to any potential loss of intended functions were timely detected, the extent of degradation quantified, and recommended corrective actions immediately implemented.
Services Provided
Project Management, Inspections and Engineering Consulting services were required to generate the Condition Assessments / MR Structural Monitoring Inspection Reports for SSCs. The following are two selective cases:
According to the NRC, it is IPEC responsibility to provide sufficient illumination to the reactors shutdown components and access and egress routes. In addition, the security lighting is supplied power from the security diesel and is, therefore, not vulnerable to fire loss under the postulated fire scenario. Consequently, inspections for monitoring the physical condition of twenty three (23) specific Light Pole Structures, and applicable building structures, that provided illumination to the Safe Shutdown / Emergency Access Paths were performed and recommended corrective actions developed and implemented.
Monitoring inspections were also performed to the physical condition of thirteen (13) specific 345K Steel Pole Structures (SPS) and their concrete foundations located at the primary Electrical Distribution Substation.
All indications were evaluated for their effect on the structure based on engineering experience and applicable AISC, ACI, NY Building Codes, and per other applicable references.
